As an interior designer, I have seen my fair share of mistakes. Some of them are small and easy to fix, while others are more major and require a bit more effort. The good news is that these slip-ups are easily rectifiable with a bit of know-how.

In this blog post, I will share three of the most common mistakes I see homeowners make, and I will offer some tips on how to fix them.

3 Mistakes I Would Never Make as an Interior Designer

1. Hanging your Draperies Too Low

I see this one all the time, but luckily, it has a pretty easy fix. Maybe you’ve hung your drapery panels directly over your windows or sliders–it makes sense, right? It’s tempting to hang them directly over windows, but the key to enhancing your space is to think vertically. Hanging drapery panels at the ceiling level can create an illusion of elongated walls and taller ceilings, instantly elevating the room.

The FIX: To fix these Design Blunders, simply move your rod higher and add longer drapery panels. This simple adjustment draws the eye upward, adding an air of sophistication and spaciousness to your space. If you don’t want to mess with the rod, add a valance to the top of your draperies. This will help to cover up the gap between the rod and the ceiling and create the illusion of taller ceilings.

2. Placing your Artwork Too High

Another common mistake is hanging artwork too high. To strike the right balance, follow the two-thirds rule: the width of your artwork should be around two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. So if you have an 84″ sofa, the artwork should be about 56″ wide. It might seem scary to put something large up, but trust me-it’ll look MUCH better.

The FIX: If you’ve already hung your artwork too high, consider changing its placement or opting for a larger piece that aligns with the furniture’s dimensions. If you don’t want to change the art, you can create a gallery wall of smaller pieces that would take up a larger amount of space.

3. Rugs that are Too Small for the Room

The size of your rug plays a crucial role in grounding and defining the space. We want our rugs to anchor the furniture in the room, so don’t be afraid to go bigger. A small rug just makes the whole room look awkward and out of proportion.

The FIX: To fix this mistake, measure your furniture, and make sure at least the front legs of all your furniture are on top of the rug. Going for a larger rug will anchor the room, creating a cohesive and well-proportioned look. If you have a large space, you can even go for an oversized rug that extends beyond the furniture.
